The Groton Democratic Town Committee is pleased to sponsor Groton's annual local Candidates' Night. It will be held Tuesday, May 14, 2019 at 7:30 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center at the Middle School (where we hold town meeting). Robert Gosselin will once again facilitate this event. He will be in touch with candidates if he hasn't already requesting biographical sketches and outline the format for the evening. Candidates are asked to arrive at 7 pm. Groton residents are encourage to bring good questions about important issues that our elected leaders will be dealing with in the next year or two.
The Groton Republican Town Committee was invited to co-sponsor this event as they have traditionally done. We were told their committee was not in a position to do so until they reorganize. The Groton Democratic Town Committee continued planning for the event and checked in at the last moment to see if that reorganization had occurred and were they now in a position to co-sponsor. The answer was no, but that a group of Republicans including one candidate for local office would like to. We asked for clarification twice on who the group was and there was no answer. Our committee declined the vague offer and felt that it would be inappropriate for any candidate to co-sponsor the event. We hope that next year the Groton Republican Town Committee will be reorganized and able to co-sponsor Candidates' Night. We were disappointed last year when they declined to co-sponsor the 2018 candidates night. This event is an opportunity for citizens to question those running for office before they vote and we are proud to provide this public service.
